British Isles made Sweet Eye Candy

This map is a real piece of eye candy - a model of the British Isles made completely from sweets.

Artist Paul Baker turned the UK into Sweet Britain using more than 4,000 sweets in a painstaking model that even includes iconic British landmarks such as Stonehenge and Tower Bridge.

The two-metre-long creation, which took two months to make, also features edible miniatures of the Angel of the North, Silverstone racetrack, the Loch Ness monster, Hadrian's Wall and Mount Snowdon.

Food model artist Paul, 49, said the mouth-watering masterpiece took twice as long to make than planned because some of the sweets melted in the sun.

Paul, from London, said: 'It was painstaking to get every sweet accurately placed in each region but the final result does look good enough to eat.

'It didn't help that we had some hot weather in May, which melted the boiled sweets we used.

'The piece should last a long time because sweets are made of sugar, which is a preservative. You just can't keep it in a very hot room.'

Paul's 'Sweet Map of the UK' was made with dozens of different types of treats.

Heavenly: A toffee Angel of the North

In a survey by Taveners Proper Sweets, 1,500 sweet-toothed Brits were asked for their favourite sweet, with the results mapped out according to each region's favourite in Paul's tasty creation.

People in the South East voted liquorice their favourite, Midlanders opted for jelly babies and the South-West and North-West declared wine gums their favourite sweet.

The Angel of the North, the 20m North-East icon in Gateshead, was recreated using toffees and mint humbugs.

Pre-historic Wiltshire monument Stonehenge is scaled down using green jelly babies and wine gums, while the Scottish Loch Ness monster is modelled using dolly mixtures.

Paul even managed to produce tiny versions of Tower Bridge and Silverstone race track with Liquorice Allsorts, complete with jelly baby driver for the legendary British race course.

He said: 'The Angel of the North was the most difficult to create, it was amazing how the sweets worked so well to create it.

'But the Loch Ness monster is my personal favourite as I could be a little bit more creative rather than accurate."

Paul hopes to eventually donate the sugary UK replica to a children's hospital.

Quantum Man by Julian Voss-Andreae

    Quantum Man

Quantum Man is a modern sculpture created by Julian Voss-Andreae, which is located in the City of Moses Lake, Washington.

Drawing inspiration from Voss-Andreae's background in physics[2], “Quantum Man” is the image of a walking man seen as a quantum object. Made up of over a hundred vertically oriented steel sheets, the 8’ (2.50 m) tall sculpture provides a metaphor for the counter-intuitive world of quantum physics. Symbolizing the dual nature of matter, the sculpture seems to consist of solid steel when seen from the front but nearly disappears when seen from the side, as light shines through the spaces between the slabs[3].

In 2007, Voss-Andreae created a second version called "Quantum Man 2" in stainless steel.

Julian Voss-Andreae (born 15 August 1970 in Hamburg, Germany) is a German sculptor living and working in the U.S.

Voss-Andreae started out as a painter and later studied experimental physics at the universities of Berlin, Edinburgh and Vienna. Voss-Andreae pursued his graduate research in quantum physics in Anton Zeilinger's research group, participating in an experiment demonstrating quantum behavior for the largest objects to date. He moved to the U.S. in 2000 and graduated from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2004.

Voss-Andreae’s work is heavily influenced by his background in science. His work includes protein sculptures. such as Angel of the West (2008). a large-scale outdoor sculpture for the Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter (Fla.) portraying the human antibody molecule, a sculpture for Nobel laureate Roderick MacKinnon based on the ion channel structure. and the quantum physics-inspired Quantum Man (2006)

Underwater Pinewood Studios films display

Underwater photos from some of Pinewood Studios' most famous films are to go on display for the first time.

They feature stars such as Keira Knightley, Myleene Klass, Sharon Stone and Matt Lucas, who have all swum in the giant tank.

Natural born swimmer: James Blunt during a film shoot for the Brit Awards

'It's exciting to show the story of the production through underwater pictures,' said Phoebe Rudomino, a commercial diver and photographer who took all the shots.

'It's interesting to take a wider shot and show what is going on behind the camera. The final image or film sequence may look very slick but the reality will often be very different.

'There may be gaffer tape holding a bikini together or divers hanging upside down to keep someone in a certain position but the viewer will only ever see the final polished shot.'

Water baby: Matt Lucas takes the plunge while filming Little Britain

The underwater stage, which opened in 2005, is a globally unique facility and has been used for a huge number of TV commercials, music videos and films, including the Boat That Rocked, Bourne Ultimatum, Atonement, Elizabeth and Casino Royale.

It houses a permanently filled water tank, which holds 1.2 million litres of water and is heated at 32 degrees.

'All the underwater sequences are a challenge as you have to come at it from a different angle and there will often be a lot of people squeezed into a small space,' said Phoebe, who has worked at Pinewood since the facility opened five years ago.

Like a duck to water: Keira Knightley floats effortlessly while doing a charity shoot for Fresh 2o drinking water

Underwater access is limited so often all the director can see is the image coming out of the camera.

'They don't get to see all the things which are going on behind the scenes so it's interesting for me to capture that.

'We have a very good team but each shoot presents its own problems and its all about planning.'

Pouting for the camera: Sharon Stone gets into character filming a scene for Basic Instinct 2

Actress Keira Knightley is among a number of celebrities to have filmed in the underwater studio and was a 'natural.'

'She did a charity shoot for Fresh 20 drinking water and she was very good underwater,' said Phoebe.

'We had to train her to use scuba equipment and she was naturally very good.

'She was wearing a fairly heavy dress which made it hard but she was surrounded by safety divers and she did very well.'

Graceful swimmer: Myleene Klass does an underwater scene for her CNN International show

Presenter and singer Myleene Klass was also filmed swimming gracefully underwater for her monthly CNN International show.

'She was great in the water. We often find singers are good at holding their breath,' added Phoebe.

'A big part of the shoot is making the artiste feel comfortable because they may have to look serene and beautiful in the water but are likely to be feeling exactly the opposite.

'I think Myleene really enjoyed the shoot and the images looked fantastic.'

Fish eye lens: Robert Lindsay in a scene from a Morrisons advert

Singer James Blunt had no problems when he filmed a Brit Awards promo underwater as he is a trained diver.

'He is very experienced and knew exactly what he was doing,' said Phoebe.

'We did a shot where he is suspended mid-water which can be a bit tricky.' Phoebe, who has been shooting underwater photography for eight years, says she finds working with babies one of the most challenging parts of the job.

Charlie the baby gets in on the act, despite floating the wrong way round

'The Getty baby shoot was hard as Charlie kept floating the wrong way round,' she said.

But one of her favourite shoots was a piece about sharks for the Discovery Channel.

'We had two animatronic six foot Great Whites and 5,000 litres of fake blood. It was a lot of fun.' The exhibition, entitled Water on the Lens will be held in Movieum of London on the Southbank throughout October.

Cathie Jung world Smallest Waist

Pensioner Cathie Jung has worn tight-fitting corsets for years to become the woman with the world's smallest waist.

The super-fit 70-year-old has a tiny waist which measures just 15in (38cm) - making her figure distinctly hourglass.

The Queen of Corsets, as she has aptly named herself, appears in the new edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

    Cathie Jung world Smallest Waist

Cathie Jung’s tiny waist really does measure just 15in. But the super-thin 70-year-old insists there is no, ahem, corset for concern. Grandmother Cathie is perfectly healthy despite having a midriff that can be reduced to the size of a large mayonnaise jar. And having the smallest living person’s waistline has got her into the new edition of the Guinness Book Of Records.

Cathie’s astonishing 39-15-39 figure is the result of spending the last 25 years laced into tight corsets, which only come off when she showers.Cathie, from Manteo, North Carolina, reckons that while her corsets restrict her waist they don’t hold her back from everyday tasks.

She said: “I do everything that I want to do. I eat fairly small meals but I prefer that at my age anyway. I find it tricky sitting in low chairs and sometimes in restaurants I have to sit on the high chairs at the bar.

“I even have a special swimming costume with a corset sewn in it, so I can still go to the beach. And I am still able to do housework — unfortunately!”

Cathie’s husband Bob is an orthopaedic surgeon and he reckons his wife’s unique look does her no harm.

She said: “Bob has carried out X-rays on me and says the corset actually helps support my spine. Everything in the midriff is flexible.”
